I can’t seem to find an exact number, and have received a bill quite larger than what we expected this month. We use AT&T and are on a family share plan, but don’t have any special plans for international calls.

It really depends on your calling plan. Voice over IP (e.g. Vonage) is super cheap .06/minute for land line & .30/minute if you are calling a mobile. That is important to keep in mind. When calling a NZ mobile phone the person that initiates the call pays for the mobile service. So it is significantly more expensive to call a mobile phone.
I would call AT&T and ask that they retroactively enroll you in a plan that would reduce you bill. In my experience, if you take the time to call and contest the bill you will get an accommodation.
