My thinking is that if Apple could release a VoIP iPhone similair to Skype, then they could do away with deals they have to make with AT&T, O2, Orange, T-mobile etc altogether and run the whole show themselves. What do you think?

would be great to see a small British company like apple grab such a thing … apple have bin long underrated… and are only now starting to grab the big people attention …
Yes. It’s technically available now and has been for a long time. If you have 3G or wifi internet on your phone, you can install and use skype. However, the data costs may be more than the cost of a phone call. I hope they do switch soon because I think voip is much better than traditional phone. However, I don’t think they have worked out how to charge for calls on voip.
