Why am I being surcharged? I’m on the Sprint Network, during the “free minutes” zone (e.g. 8:30pm), calling a toll free, 1-800 number in America (AT&T Calling card) and then connecting to the number in Canada. The calling card shows that my call was placed through it and I I was billed for the call. [...]

The calling card shows that my call was placed through it and I I was billed for the call. Sprint did not incur any international charges whatsoever for my call. Why am I also being surcharged by Sprint?

They have had a loss for the last 9 consecutive quarters, ironically, their first profit comes in the midst of a recession. Alcatel Lucent, created in a merger between Alcatel from France, and Lucent from the US in 2006, is one of the worlds largest Telecom companies. (Incidentally, Lucent split into Avaya and Lucent in the early part of this decade).
